Retroactive Chapter12 Legislation Sent to President
President Bush signed H.R. 4167 earlier
this week, making chapter 12 bankruptcy protection retroactive from Oct. 1,
2001, and extending it to May 31, 2002. The Senate voted 64-35 to approve
a farm bill conference report and then sent the bill to the president for his
signature, reported. The White
House has not said when he would sign it, but Senate Agriculture Chairman
Committee Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) noted at a news conference after Wednesday’s
vote that the president had promised to sign the bill “promptly.".
The farm bill contains a
provision that would extend chapter 12 bankruptcy protection through Dec. 31,
2002.
